This study aims to investigate the current status of present after-school programs in Gwangju, compare after-school music program which is university-oriented and social business-based with existing music programs and present suggestions and directions for them.
Regarding the methods of study, data on music programs of speciality-oriented after-school in Gwangju were collected to identify the current status. In particular, the study gave a focus on after-school music program supported by universities and social business organizations, university-oriented after-school executed in 2012 by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology.
The suggestions for university-oriented after-school social business are presented as follows:
First, as it was designed to solve the problems of existing after-school programs, it has sufficient support from the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, local governments and education offices.
Second, various after-school programs such as intensive programs, sports and art programs, and care programs have been presented in the way where students can exercise advanced ability learned from their college study. Also, in preparation for five days a week system, various creative activities were planned and managed. In accordance with the 2009 Revised Curriculum, an emphasis was given on creative hand-on programs, which is usually managed by university-oriented after-school social business and gives positive effects on music education.
Third, it is expected that diverse after-school programs can give more job opportunities to the unemployed who graduated from teachers' college and education colleges.
Fourth, high quality after-school programs were provided for rural areas where there are many small-sized schools and even isolated classes. Rural areas including fishing and mountain villages have difficulties in obtaining good instructors who can manage various programs. Various programs which are provided to students living in rural areas by graduates from colleges located there were supported by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology.
Effective directions to activate after-school music programs are presented as follows:
First, for active management of the music programs, consistent support should be given to musical education environment. Music classrooms, practice rooms. and space where to store musical instruments should be secured and schools or education offices should give support to purchase of musical instruments in order to enhance efficacy of specialty education and satisfy environmental conditions for demanders' need.
Second, volunteers such as graduates from colleges of education or teachers' colleges, and art and sports students should join in management of various high quality programs, which will expand job and teaching opportunities. Also, their outstanding abilities should be used to provide high quality programs for students in rural areas, fishing and mountain villages.
Third, the necessity of music education should be emphasized through music after school programs, which can give helps to nurturing great personality of students. The number of programs should be increased to form desirable relationships between peer students, and various model programs such as chorus and Samulnori, project programs and cooperation programs should be applied.
Fourth, continuous support networks should be developed between central and local governments and the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology. As development of music education can not be completed for a short time, consistent attention should be paid to it. Schools for after-school programs should be designated specially or various support systems for instructors, musical instruments or music environment should be developed specifically.
