Abstract

Study on ways to utilize arts education for middle schools using local festivals (targeting Gwangju·Jelloanamdo)

The modern trend in education is local characterization. Local tradition and cultures are being forgotten from our daily lives due to the development of science and technology and modern civilization. An effort to restore this is required and interest and love for our tradition would be developed naturally while learning and practicing traditional culture and the study intended to utilize traditional cultures as a means of educating arts. The aim of the study is to examine education effects when using local festivals on arts education and preparing lesson plans based on the findings. The study consists of 6 chapters. Chapter 1 describes the goal and necessity of study and its details on the study and methods. Chapter 2 examined the concepts and meanings of local festivals to analyze education effects of local festivals and analyzed education elements and effects of local festivals. It also studied meanings of local festivals integrating with arts education. Chapter 3 studied overall overviews on each festival held in Gwangju, Jeollanamdo and other regions and stated the reasons for selecting this festival and not others and studied programs. The study intended to study the values and educational effects of festivals. The study also tried to check whether the results of studying festivals in other regions will have the same effects from analyzing festivals in Gwangju, Jeollanamdo. Chapter 4 studied the use of local festivals and educational effects. The study intended to study which area to emphasize educationally be studying educational effects of festivals and ways to utilize local festivals in education. Lastly, the study proposed actual teaching methods and teaching plans for more effective teaching through local festivals in Chapter 5. Various programs of local festivals and its historical meanings can be utilized through this study and it contains many elements related with arts such as paining, crafting, appreciation thus the study concluded that it was highly effective in teaching arts out of class. Furthermore, it allowed students to enjoy arts more easily and proposed lesson plans meeting the objective.
