These days, we have been engaged in more leisure activities according to the system of five days work a week and increased economic affluence. In particular, more adults have been interested in musical instruments thanks to various audition programs on TV and in particular, piano has been preferred most. Although the number of adults who want to learn how to play it is increasing, research on piano teaching methods and school is scanty.
As adults have different characteristics from children, teachings methods considering that should be developed, for which adults' experiences should be used as a learning resource.
Therefore, this study analysed the piano education and problems for adult learners based on previous studies. Also, one of the piano schools for beginners was selected for specific analysis.
The main material selected for this study is was ‘Piano Adventure for Adults’ translated and published by Music Tree. It was composed of a total of four volumes and one of them was analysed to extract its advantages and disadvantages.
In order to make it easier to identify the general mechanism of ‘Piano Adventure for Adults 1’, various sub-points of this book such as musical playing, physical techniques, and basic theories of each unit were made up into a take and classified.
It helps learners to acquire playing, techniques and theories with one volume so that they become able to transpose keys, compose music and play the piano in more musical and creative way. It is believed that as repertories present various genres such as famous symphonies, spiritual songs and foreign folk songs as well as children songs, they will motivate them to learn However, as they were foreign books translated, it lacks in introduction of Korean music. Therefore, instructors should develop more methods to supplement its disadvantages, for example, adding Korean folk songs.
This study has a great meaning in that it tried to understand characteristics of adults who want to learn how to play a piano in a proper way and help them with selecting the best repertories for them.
