뮤지컬「시카고」에 나타나는 무용의 형태 및 특성 분석

Abstract

현재 뮤지컬은 짧은 역사에도 불구하고 양적이나 질적으로 비약적인 발전을 거듭해왔다. 뮤지컬은 무용과 음악 연극적인 요소가 한데 어우러진 종합예술의 양식으로 대중적 성격을 지닌 공연예술로서 특히 뮤지컬은 연극에 비해 드라마적 구조는 다소 약하지만 무용과 음악이 주는 감동과 호소력이 압도적인 예술이라 할 수 있다. 또한 현대에 들어서는 뮤지컬 안무가 음악과 함께 극을 뒷받침하는 요소가 아니라 극의 흐름을 끌고 간다고 해도 과언이 아니다.

특히 뮤지컬에서 무용은 극을 전개하는 과정에서 창조적이고 독특한 위치를 차지하고 있기 때문에 더욱 기교의 향상을 필요로 한다. 뮤지컬 안무에서는 발레, 현대무용, 한국무용, 재즈, 탭댄스, 스윙, 캐릭터 댄스 등 여러 가지 다양한 춤의 장르들이 등장하며 작품의 색에 맞게 안무되어지고 다양한 극적 효과를 내는 장치로 사용되어진다. 본 논문은 이러한 뮤지컬의 안무의 구성과 무용의 형태 및 특성을 연구하여 뮤지컬에 있어 어떠한 긍정적 효과를 내는지에 대해 알아봄으로서 현재 미흡한 뮤지컬 안무 분야에 이론적 연구와 더불어 좀 더 독창적이고 창조적인 안무를 구성하는 것에 목표를 둔다.

뮤지컬의 무용의 역할과 기교의 향상은 외국의 경우 뮤지컬 연출과 무용 안무를 겸하고 있는 것을 볼 때 더욱 그러하다. 이를 볼 때 뮤지컬에 있어서 무용의 역할은 연출가만큼 중요한 위치에 있음을 알 수 있다. 그러나 뮤지컬에 있어서 중요한 위치를 차지하고 있는 무용은 전문성을 고려한 움직임 표현의 개발이나 학술적인 연구에는 미비한 상태이다.

뮤지컬과 무용에 관련된 기존의 연구들을 살펴보면, 뮤지컬에 나타난 춤의 기능적 역할에만 국한 되어 있다. 따라서 본 연구는 기존의 선학들의 연구를 바탕으로 양질의 뮤지컬을 만들기 위한 안무가의 중요성과 움직임 표현의 발전 및 기능적 역할 수행의 발전에 기초 자료를 제공하고자 한다. 이를 위해 뮤지컬 작품에 나타난 무용 형태의 흐름을 살펴봄으로써 뮤지컬에 있어 무용의 기능적 역할의 중요성과 함께 무용 형태의 변화를 연구하고자 하였다.

이를 위해 본 논문은 먼저 이론적 배경으로 뮤지컬의 형성과정 및 특성에 대해 기술하며 뮤지컬의 종류와 구조에 대해 살펴보고, 뮤지컬에 있어 무용의 정의와 기능에 대해 알아보았다. Ⅲ장에서는 뮤지컬 무용의 유형별 특징과 전개구성에 대해 알아보고 무용의 기능이 두드러지게 나타나는 작품을 선정하여 작품별로 나타나는 안무의 형태 및 구성을 비교 분석하였다. Ⅳ장에서는 뮤지컬 「시카고」에서 나타나는 무용의 형태 및 특성을 분석하기 위해 장면별로 나타난 무용의 종류와 안무 스타일, 무용수의 규모와 구성형태를 살펴보았고, Musical number에 나타나는 안무 스타일을 연구함으로써 무용의 극적 기능을 유추하여 결론에 도달하고자 한다.

그 결과 뮤지컬 작품에 나타난 춤의 형태는 뮤지컬 작품 내용과 성향에 적합한 춤의 형태를 가지고 있었으며 작품에 따라 춤의 l역할 비중이 다소 차이가 있었으나 공통적으로 작품의 내용을 보충하면서도 볼거리를 제공하고 있었음을 알 수 있었다.

결국 뮤지컬 작품에서의 춤은 볼거리의 움직임뿐만 아니라 다양한 테크닉의 중요성 못지않게 타당한 극적 동기에 맞춰 안무하는 것이 중요하며, 작품에 적합한 창의성 있는 동작 개발에 대한 지속적인 연구와 노력이 필요 할 것이다. 그리하여 뮤지컬 작품 속에서의 무용 역할 확대를 계속적으로 이루어 나가야 하겠다.|In spite of its short history, musicals have tremendously developed in quality as well as in quantity. Musical is a form of art putting dance, music and theatrical elements together, with a popular performing arts characteristics. Even though its dramatical structure is weaker than dramas, one can say that musical is overwhelming art from the impression and appealing from the dance and music. Also in modern times, it is no exaggeration to say that musical choreography supports not only the play with music but also leads the plot.

Especially in musicals, dance needs far improvement of techniques because it has a creative and distinctive place in the development process. There are diverse genres of dances such as ballet, modern dance, jazz dance, tap dance, swing dance, character dance and so on that appears in musical choreography and is choreographed according to the works color and is used to make various dramatic effect. This thesis has studied such musical’s choreographic compositions and dancing forms and characteristics, finding out what positive effects it has in musicals and aims to composit more creative and original dance and theoretical study in current insufficient part of musical choreography. The role of dance and the improvement of techniques in musical can be found overseas which musical combines both direction and choreography. Therefore the role of dancing in musical is as important as the producer. However, the dancing which holds the key post in the musical, is in incomplete state of movement considering professional expressional development or scholarly research The earlier studies about musical and dancing are limited to the functional role of dance in musical. Therefore this paper provides basic information on importance of choreographers and development of moving expressions and functional role playing to product a quality musical based on the earlier studies. In examining the flow of dancing forms appearing in musicals, I attempted to study the importance of functional roles as well as change of the forms of dance in musical.

As a theoretical background, the thesis has firstly described the formation process and characteristics, types and structures and definition of dancing of musical. Chapter 3 looks at the features of categories in musical dancing and types and composition of development of dance in musical and selected a work which remarkably indicates the function of dance to compare and analyze the form and the composition of choreography indicated in the work. Chapter 4, looks the types of dance, the style of choreography, the scale and form of dancers to analyze the dancing forms and characteristic in the musical 「Chicago」, also looks at the style of the choreography which appears in musical number to arrive at a conclusion on the analogy of the dramatic skill of dancing. As a result, the dancing appearing in musical works have appropriate dances to the contents and types of musical. Although there is slight difference in the importance of the dance role, according to the work, we could know that it provides attractions supplement with various visual treats in common.

Eventually, it is important not only the movement as a visual treat but also dancing with the proper dramatic motivation as much as the significance of the various techniques. Also the continuous study and effort for the development of suitable and creative movement is required.

For this reason, expanding the role of dance in musical should be done consistently.
