Abstract
With rapid changes of current society and increased new information, visual objects have been continuously changing. In such changes, people need changes in artistic expression, aesthetic judgement and cultural information. Artists have expanded entire environment into artistic works, escaping from narrow studios or fixed space of the canvass, and the environmental art revived interest in three-dimensional forms, huge sizes and new space for architecture and landscape. Likewise, public art education has been considered as a future-oriented concept in that it focuses on friendliness as our surrounding space or aesthetics of harmony between natural space as art has extended to indoor space. Therefore, this study aims to develop art education programs using public art for secondary school students and present effective teaching methods. To achieve the purposes, the study made a theoretical review on public art and urban environment, and presented the necessity of public art in urban environment and its educational values.
The study is composed of as follows: Chapter 2 described the general concept of public art, its historical flow and types, and directions for art class using public art. Chapter 3 analysed the current status of public art education and results, and described directions on art class using public art. Chapter 4 presented teaching plans using public creative activities and appreciation to nurture community spirit of students.
It is expected that through this program students can rediscover the values of public art works which they are familiar with and have interest in art in life, and positive educational effects will be achieved. Also, through public art appreciation and criticism program, students' aesthetic senses can be enhanced and its effects on urban environment and communities will be reconsidered.
