The Effects of Taekwon Gymnastics on the Sense of Equilibrium of Adolescents with Intellectual Disability

The purpose of this study is to analyze a combination of the Korean indigenous sport of Taekwondo and music, the development of a Taekwon gymnastics program for intellectual disabled adolescents, and proposes the thesis that this program has positive effects on the sense of equilibrium of intellectual disabled people. Furthermore this study analyzes the progress and improvement of the sense of direction ability, moving ability and the sense of equilibrium of adolescents with intellectual disability in order to promote a better life for the intellectual disabled adolescent as a disabled person.

In order to achieve this purpose, this study selected eleven adolescents with intellectual disabilities who resided in G city and were enrolled as students of S school. A Taekwon gymnastics program was developed and tested with them over a period of twelve weeks from May to July 2011. Following results about the statical equilibrium and dynamic equilibrium of the intellectual disabled adolescents prior to and after the experiment were obtained.

1) The analysed result of the low factor of the statical equilibrium of adolescents with intellectual ability through standing on one leg with closed eyes, first on the left, then on the right, and standing on a stick on one leg, first on the left, then on the right, according to the measure time was noticeable in each statistic (p<.001), as well as an interaction effect during the group and measure time was found (p<.001). Furthermore the change of the left and right, standing on a stick on one leg, was not noticeable in each statistic according to the measure time, as well as an interaction effect during the group and measure time was not found (p<.001).

2) The analysed result of the low factor of the dynamic equilibrium of adolescents with intellectual disability through the change of the Cureton and the change of walking straight forward and backward has a noticeable difference in each statistic according to the measure time (p<.01), as well as an interaction effect during the group and the measure time was found (p<.001). Moreover the change of the Cureton and a statistical significance according to the measure time, as well as an interaction effect during the group and measure time was shown (p<.001).
