ABSTRACT

A Study on the Effects of Art Therapy using
Collage on Improvement of Mental Health
and Self-esteem of Adolescents

Collage as one of art activities provides mental and physical comfort and emotional support for adolescents. This study aims to analyse various psychological elements inherent in adolescents and to identify what effect art activities using collage have on mental health and self-esteem of adolescents.
The subjects of the study were 131 students in the 2nd grade from four classes of a middle school in Gwangju and the effect of art activities on their mental health and self-esteem was analysed. They were categorized into two groups. the control group(class A and B) and the test group(class C and D), and the results are as follows:
As a result of analysing mental health, it was discovered that their mental health got improved after the collage art program and its significance was p<.01. It means that the collage art therapy had positive effect on mental health of the subjects.
As a result of analysing self-esteem, it was discovered that the mean value of self-esteem in the test group increased to 2.50 after the program and its significance was p<.01. It indicates that the art therapy had a positive effect on improvement of self-esteem of the subjects.
In conclusion, it was verified that collage art therapy contributed to improved mental health and self-esteem of adolescents, and the collage art therapy program used in this study had more effect on mental health rather than self-esteem.
This study has the following limits: First, the collage program was provided for a short period of 6 sessions and the subjects were no more than 131. So, it is hard to gain exact results on it and generalize the results for other adolescents.
In spite of the limits of the collage program in this study, in considering that collage program makes a considerable contribution to better mental health and self-esteem, more diversified programs considering characteristics of adolescents with enough time should be developed.
