Research on People’s Awareness of Traditional Music Through Appreciation Class on Korean Traditional Music
Focused on the students in the 1st year of middle school

In the revised 2007 music education course, it is classified into activities, comprehension and making it a way of life. Particularly in music class, activities are more emphasized. According to Elliot, music is not static but dynamic, and it does not existas a concept but in performance. He saw “playing music” as more fitting word than “music” in describing what is meant by music. Therefore, Elliot argued that in music class, it is more important to play music than to explain music and one approaches to a core better if one gets involved and experiences music rather than simply listening to and understanding music.
Through analyzing survey results on traditional music appreciation parts that are emphasized in first year middle school’s music textbooks as per the revised 2007 music curriculum, this study seeks to recommend a dynamic form of traditional music appreciation education method that is different from the existing static traditional music appreciation education method. Through this study, the author strived to help the students to learn about traditional music more easily, to understand traditional music, and to make them aware of and be interested in traditional music through applying thematic songs into real life.
To this end, the author took surveys of and analyzed the results of the students’ understanding after learning about “daechuita” and “chuita” which are traditional musical pieces suggested in middle school textbooks in the revised 2007 music curriculum.
As such, through learning about traditional musical pieces, one can expect that the students’ interest level and positive developments such as long-term memory of things learned will be increased in the same way that they will be proud of and be interestedin traditional music.
