Today's music education at schools focuses on giving opportunities to experience beautiful music through various songs and musical activities and nurturing creative elites with basic knowledge on music and ability to enjoy it. However, as schools give teacher-oriented education and have few teaching methods which are appropriate for music education, there are limits to access to various musical activities.
Cooperative learning is an organized education through which small groups of students learn together to achieve common goals and can have positive effect on students' recognition of pleasure and values of music through a variety of musical activities. In particular, application of cooperative learning for music appreciation helped students understand music as active subjects.
Therefore, this study analysed theoretical background of cooperative learning through bibliographical examination and developed a teaching and learning plan in which a cooperative learning model was applied for music appreciation. The study selected two pieces of western music which are published in 8 kinds of music textbooks for first graders of middle schools and developed a plan focusing on STAD model and Jigsaw II model which are appropriate for music appreciation class. The results are presented as follows:
First, music appreciation for which cooperative learning was applied based on group activities improved students' understanding of music, and social cooperative skills such as responsibility and care for other students, and communication.
Second, the music appreciation class helped students deal with the tasks given through group activities, be automatically prepared for class, be motivated for learning and focus on class.
Third, the music appreciation class led students to actively participate in class as a subject of self-leading learning.
Such results indicate that music appreciation has a positive effect on affective areas such as learning motivation, learning attitudes, personal relations and development of sociality as well as academic achievements.
To effectively apply the cooperative learning, students should understand and perceive the cooperative learning definitely and teachers should be careful in selecting the challenges to be given so that students can deal with them within a given time. They should control students through positive rewards to the cooperative learning.
This study developed a teaching and learning plan of music appreciation for which cooperative learning was applied and suggests that further studies which compare traditional learning with the cooperative learning are needed to accurately evaluate efficiency of the latter. It is expected that such studies will provide diversified and effective teaching methods for teachers and help students participate in music appreciation more actively.
