- Abstract
- Honorific expressions play a very important role in establishing social and human relations in contemporary society. Although there almost disappear social-standing relations in modern society, honorific expressions are ignorable, indispensible elements in a society with social rules that regulate social standing. They have an important role in contemporary society in that a correct and appropriate use of them in consideration of the relations between speaker and listener can cause harmonious human relations. The Japanese language has developed honorific expressions like the Korean language has. However, the system of honorific expressions in Korean is constant regardless of situation and person. By contrast, it in Japanese differs from situation to situation?scenes and mutual relations?which puts Korean learners of Japanese in difficulties and confusion.
This paper surveys and analyzes the honorific expressions shown in textbooks used at high schools. Because except for common features between two languages, when Korean learners of Japanese speak in an honorific expression, there are a lot of differences in operation although they seem similar, this paper surveys the definitions of the honorific expressions, the studies of classification by scholars, and the characteristics of modern honorific expressions.
