Abstract
When we look up a polysemous word in a dictionary, many different and seemingly distinct senses are listed. The impression we get from the dictionary entry is that a word can have many distinct senses unrelated to each other. However, cognitive grammar, as proposed by Langacker(1983), has held a new way on polysemous semantic structure. He claimed that the lexical meanings can not be explained unless human cognitive ability and conventional knowledge of the word are taken into account.
The aim of this thesis is to analyze the various meanings of the word, cover and to find out the interrelation of those meanings within the framework of Cognitive Grammar. The analysis is based on authentic data, collected from various dictionaries.
This study is organized as follows: In Chapter 1 begins with a brief account of the purpose and the content of this study. In Chapter 2, the basic assumption and concepts directly relevant for this analysis are explained. The process of cognitive mechanisms, such as metaphor and metonymy, is reviewed, as well. In Chapter 3, the meanings of the word, cover are analyzed on the basis of cognitive grammar and cognitive mechanisms. Chapter 4 contains a result of this study.
