Abstract
The Effect of the Vocabulary Learning with Images
; by Using Photos, Pictures and Movies

This study explores the effect of vocabulary learning with images which can influence the students' vocabulary learning. According to the 7th national curriculum, we pursue to achieve communicative competence by developing the harmony of four skills; reading, writing, listening and speaking. Regarding this, the importance of vocabulary acquisition is emphasized to teach language effectively with developing various teaching methods and strategies.
40 Korean ninth grade students were participated in this study. Survey and interview were used to collect the data. The experimental group was taught 40 vocabularies using images, while the control group was taught the same words by paper-pencil based repetition; just memorizing the meaning of words by themselves. After taking all of the vocabulary tests, 10 students in experimental group were interviewed to examine their experiences regarding vocabulary learning with image clips.
To accomplish the purpose of this study, three research questions were answered: First, which of the vocabulary learning is more effective for vocabulary acquisition between the learning with image clips, and the memorization by repetition? Second, what differences are there between groups which are divided into proficiency by vocabulary teaching utilizing images? Third, what is their experience for vocabulary learning with image clips?
The results of this study are summarized as follows: As to the first question, there are meaningful differences between the experiment group and the control group and that implies the teaching method with image clips is effective for students' vocabulary learning. Second, teaching with image clips can be an effectual method regardless of pre-knowledge of vocabulary. Lastly, the students who were participated in this experiment showed positive responses on vocabulary learning by using image clips.
In conclusion, these results indicate that the students' vocabulary learning can be encouraged by teaching with image clips. Therefore, to vocabulary learning with image clips will facilitate the class environment positively and be one of effective ways for growing the students' vocabulary skill.
