Abstract
The aim of this thesis is to study ellipsis phenomena in English, especially the characteristics and the type of ellipsis. This study may make it possible for EFL teachers to make good use of ellipsis as one of teaching methods for the purpose of enhancing efficient communication.
This study is organized as follows: Following chapter 1, Chapter 2 discusses the notion of ellipsis with other similar phenomena such as pro-form, deletion, and incomplete sentences. And then it focuses on the five conditions of ellipsis. First, in a strict sense of ellipsis, words are ellipted only if they are uniquely recoverable. Second, ellipsis depends on the intralingual context and situational context. Third, ellipsis must be occurred in the same type of sentences. This is called identity condition. Fourth, ellipsis is applied to the low valuable or old information rather than the valuable or new information. Fifth, ellipsis depends on interpretation of some element in the discourse dependent on that of another.
Chapter 3 deals with the five types of motivation. First, ellipsis occurs when there are some redundant or repeated elements in the sentence, based on the economic principle. Second, ellipsis is related with the focus in communication. Third, ellipsis is influenced by the conversational conventions. Fourth, ellipsis is influenced by psychological reasons. When we repeat the same words and the information that we know, we feel very bored in our mind.
Chapter 4 presents three types of ellipsis on the basis of recoverability. They are contextual ellipsis, situational ellipsis, and structural recoverability. First, contextual ellipsis is deleted by intralingual context, so the missing elements are recoverable from the previous context. This kind of ellipsis, which makes the meaning of sentences simple and clear by deleting the repeated elements, is frequent in coordinate structure, discourse level, comparative constructions. Second, situational ellipsis is deleted by extralingual context, namely, special situations of society, not by deleted the repeated elements. So, the missing elements are recoverable from situational context. Third, structural ellipsis can be recoverable not from knowledge about context but from knowledge about grammatical structure.
Chapter 5 analyzes the actual occurrences of ellipsis according to recoverability. The data was extracted from a EFL textbook titled by Middle School English(Lee et al., 2009) The results of the analysis show that EFL teachers need to treat aspects natural language for students. If it does, they might access closer to English as a natural language under classroom circumstance.
In conclusion, ellipsis plays an important role in English discourse as a grammatical device for drawing the listener's attention to the focal information with the least possible effort. Thus, further research for ellipsis needs to be done from the educational perspective.
