- Abstract
- The present study is to apply a task-based teaching method as an alternative to the conventional teacher-centered instruction focused on explanations or grammar translation. The purpose is to verify the effectiveness of task-based method to teach English reading in order to help middle school students.
The experimental process is as follows:
With newly constructed reading materials that have some tasks for students to accomplish, task-based lectures were provided to the experimental group and the conventional teacher-centered lecture to the control group for 10 weeks. The subjects of the experimental group were thirty nine students divided into three groups concerning their English reading ability: Beginner level, Intermediate level, and Advanced level. The subjects of the control group were thirty seven students divided into three group concerning their English reading ability: Beginner level, Intermediate level, and Advanced level. After the experimental classes ended, a survey was conducted on the experimental group regarding their responses to the class. The result of evaluations were analyzed through the t-test.
The results of the two groups are as follows:
First, the task-based Approach has more positive effects on improving English reading ability.
Second, in the case of advanced level students, task-based approach and teacher-centered instruction does not have significant improvement on English reading ability after the experiments of 10 weeks. But in the case of intermediate, beginner level students, task-based approach has significant effect on English reading ability.
Third, task-based approach showed a more positive effect on the students' affective domains of experimental group comparing with those of the control group.
In conclusion, the task-based approach is more effective than teacher centered instruction to improve reading ability and change affective domain in positive way. It can be predicted that English reading ability and positive affective domain can be improved by applying task-based teaching method to classroom for a long term. Therefore, in relation to task-based approach, a lot of teaching activities and materials should be developed and practically applied in the classroom.
