The Effect of School Music Education on Adult Life and Its Future Directions: Centering on Curriculum of Music in High Schools

The seventh curriculum of music for high schools was designed to foster greater musical sensitivity and a desirable sense of value through a variety of tunes and music activities. It also directs students to listen to music, play musical instruments, analyze what they listen to and understand the functions and values of music in their life. However, there are many cases where music education in schools tends to be narrowly managed in contents and activities due to limits within the curriculum and factors related to the music teachers. That is, it has not made a significant influence on the development of a desirable sense of value of music and once students leave the schools, they are exposed to a music culture which is wholly different from that which they have been exposed to at school. Therefore, this study identifies the current status of school music education and analyzes what music adults are now exposed to, using a questionnaire. This study also points out problems based on the data collected, and presents future directions for better music education, with the aim of encouraging a healthy and abundant life through music. This study looks at music textbooks which are being used under the seventh Curriculum, not the 2007 revised curriculum, to analyze such transitional school music education. The subjects of the study were 200 adults in their early twenties who completed the music program of high schools though they did not major in music. We studied what effects their high school music education had on their adult life. The results of the study are summarized as follows: First, the subjects who had music education for which the seventh curriculum was applied answered that they want to have access to diverse genres of music embedded in their life such as singing songs, music appreciation, playing instruments and understanding music That is, it means they want music education to be connected with their actual life. Second, they answered that there were many difficulties in learning to play different kinds of musical instruments. So, though few adults can play instruments well, many of them want to learn to play instruments very well and expect to have interactions through solo or concert music performance and more time to play instruments in present music education. Third, they pointed out that music education should help them to enjoy music in their real life through club activities though it has little influence on adult life or no connection with it. As a result, this study presents future directions of music education based on the results analyzed. First, we should develop new textbooks which reflect new curriculum and whose contents can be applied for our real life. Further, music education at school should provide diversified activity programs instead of teacher-oriented classes centering on textbooks. Second, it is very urgent to develop more effective teacher training programs and it is most desirable for teachers themselves to be experienced teachers through continuous self-development. Third, music education should encourage students to create their own music and arrange existing music using computers to realize the possibility of educational engineering. Though there are some schools that are already doing this. They can enjoy music naturally, even when no education is given, after they have left the schools system. Fourth, music education at schools should help students to enhance their social activities through instrument-making or activities beyond just simply playing instruments. Through meditative learning activities and real experiences, music should naturally induce us to experience society, that is, to have connections with life. Finally, based on the results above, this study suggests that diversified musical experiences should be given to students and expects that future music education for which the 2007 revised curriculum is applied will be effective.
