Abstract

Samkukyusa gathered various kinds of characteristics of legendary literature to record them. Ilyeon, the writer of Samkukyusa, selected and edited contents of the legendary literature in accordance with his interests to reflect universal fact and to adapt it from his own point of view. Many legendary literatures of Samkukyusa played a role of history book to describe Buddhism colors as well as mysterious contents. And, Samkukyusa described many areas such as politics, society, folk material, philosophy and culture, etc when legendary stories made a literature, so that it had characteristics of the Buddhism culture history book. The legendary literature included stories of high Buddhist monks to have values of history book and to be free from construction of a biography that most of high Buddhist monks' legendary literature had. Being different from stories of other works, Samkukyusa described religious and mysterious experience, miraculous stories and mysterious stories of the characters. And, the characters of Samkukyusa had defects, and sympathetic emotion based on divine spirit of traditional belief seemed to be very much valuable experience of the characters' lives and to show unique characteristics. The high Buddhist monks' secularism and unworldliness criticized unworldliness-orientation that made appearance superficially, and they reminded that being free from secularism did not make true unworldliness. By taking opportunity of enlightenment, ordinary experience should be set to supplement and overcome secularism. In other words, enlightenment orientation that was generally known was not true to overcome at the level higher than secularism. As a result, unworldliness could be supplemented and overcome through secular experience to cognize secular experience in valuable way. The characters of legendary stories did not indicate whether either one party was true or not, and they played their own roles of lives so that the writer Ilyeon suggested final objectives that men should reach. And, couples of each legendary literature had objectives being free from secularism to supplement and overcome each other. Therefore, Ilyeon reminded modern people of how to live life.
