A Study on the Courtly Love Poetry of W. B. Yeats

William Butler Yeats developed a familiarity with the courtly love tradition and used this familiarity to inform the poetry he wrote about to Maud Gonne MacBride. His initial knowledge of the tradition was fragmentary because it was based on the literature that comprises this tradition and its descendants. His initial use of the tradition focused on developing the roles of the poet-lover and the beloved from a primarily poetic perspective. His continued study of the works that comprise the courtly love tradition extended his initial familiarity with the tradition. This later familiarity was also based, in part, on the scholarship contemporary to him that sought to explain the tradition. His later use of the tradition is more thorough and fully encompasses the characters, situations, and motifs common to the courtly writers. Chapter one presents a brief overview of courtly love, and then maps the extent and nature of Yeat's familiarity with both the literature and the scholarship of courtly love. In Chapter two I examine Yeat's development of the characters of the poet and the beloved in the poetry he wrote to his first "love" Laura Armstrong and the early poetry he wrote to Maud Gonne. I also examine Yeat's use of courtly themes and motifs in these poems. In Chapter three I study Yeat's matured use of the courtly love tradition in the poetry he wrote to Gonne and examines the characters, themes, and style. I further explore the final path he took towards marriage and also examine his use of the tradition after his marriage.
