Abstract
Our country is changing into a multi-cultural society from a 'one nation' state. This trend stems from two major factors: one is the importation of migrant workers into labor-lacking industries thought to be dirty, difficult and dangerous since the late 1980s; the other is the increasing number of foreign wives who settle down in the Korean countryside.
As time passes, the phenomenon of international marriage is going through a trend where more and more diverse nationals are coming to Korea, and not only so-called 3D job workers but also professional alien job seekers are entering Korea. They are playing a pivotal role in leading the Korean economy. This development is likely to continue unless international marriage and worker migration do not cease.
As we have more foreigners in Korea, 'the multi-cultural families' related to international families and their offspring are on the rise. In this vein, the second generation children born in these families are going through plenty of difficulties that come from differences in language and culture.
Given the circumstances above, there is the need to increase cultural exchanges among various cultures and to expand opportunities for them to learn different cultures, so that 'the second generation in the multi-cultural families' may better adapt themselves in the multi-national and multi-cultural society. In this way, they would be able to learn and understand different cultures.
Fine arts carries out the function of absorbing and conveying the culture of the present society and its culture. That is to say, culture is closely connected to arts. In this sense, fine arts education in a multi-cultural society makes important contributions to establishing cultural identity and to understanding multi-faceted cultures and aesthetic values. In this manner, it will help people understand the background latent in the era and society they live in and develop their culture in their unique ethnic backdrop and history.
This study makes an analysis into how 'the second generation in multi-cultural families' get their fine arts education in Gwangju area, and is designed to offer a correct understanding of the concept of fine arts in the multi-cultural families and to develop an appropriate teaching guidelines, so that the guidelines can be applied in the fine arts classes where students with multi-cultural backgrounds participate.
