According to the direction on the opening of Japanese popular culture on October 20, 1998, Korea has opened its last bar to foreign cultures. Since the government of Republic of Korea was founded, as contact with Japanese popular culture has been strictly prohibited, this governmental decision is an exceptionally big issue. Thus, all sorts of people were worried about that it would bring a big whirlwind socially with much controversies. However, in spite of the condition that our culture has not been opened yet to Japanese popular culture, Japanese culture has permeated a significant number of Korean people under the cover of legal and institutional defects, and in the 1990s, with the development of the Internet network, natural invasion of Japanese popular culture could not be controled any more. As the times change, our adolescents could access to it more easily and enthusiasm for Japanese language learning increased more. As the 2nd foreign languages were designated as the subjects for college entrance examination, more students decided to pick up Japanese language as their 2nd foreign language.
Though we contact Japanese popular culture coincidently in the beginning, if it is consistently maintained, latent learning needs spring out, which may leads to favorable feeling to or necessity of language learning. In the viewpoint that we are interested in the language of the country to understand and enjoy its popular culture we prefer more in detail, export of one's popular culture works as an excellent embassador who informs his country and culture of the world as well as is profitable.
Therefore, this study examines the process that interest of Korean high school students in Japanese popular culture and their preferences evoke Japanese learning motivation according to our opening to it.
Unlike existing curriculum, the 7th Curriculum that has been applied since 2002 focuses on enhancement of communication ability and understanding of Japanese culture. If the ultimate goal of the education in Japanese language is to help students have communication ability to learn Japanese language exactly and use it properly, as it is necessary to understand behaviors of the other for true communication, understanding of Japanese culture should be emphasized.
This study is to identify learning effect adolescents can have when they contact Japanese popular culture, whether more effective learning is possible by using cultural elements for Japanese education and what proper attitude to accept Japanese popular culture is. By identifying the kinds and types of Japanese popular culture introduced in our country, this study interviews about 300 high school students in Gwangju City who are learning Japanese using a questionnaire to figure out their learning effect and efficiency.
As a result, it is demonstrated that Japanese popular culture has a very positive effect on learning of Japanese language, and as time when they are exposed to the popular culture increases, though there are much worry about that it may cause bad influence on the adolescents, it is sure that our opening to Japanese popular culture provides opportunities to help them understand foreign culture and have indirect experiences to foreign society, which indicates that it has higher correlations with learning efficiency.
Through the survey, this study concludes that a number of students have interest in Japanese popular culture which inevitably interacts with language learning, and as the opening progresses, the population who has access to Japanese popular culture and the number of Japanese language learners will increase.
