Effects of Dalcroze Music Education Program
on the Upper Limb Motor Ability
of Students with Cerebral Palsy

This study aims at identifying the effect of Dalcroze Music Education Program on the upper limb motor ability of students with cerebral palsy. It was conducted a total of 16 times for 9 weeks from May 16 2007 to July 13 2007, targeting 6 students with cerebral palsy who were taking basic curriculum for Grade 3 of middle school at the music room of their school. It used the Dalcroze Music Education Program to improve upper limb motor ability and to measure their ability, used test items presented in 「Teachers' Instruction Manual」(Ministry of Education 2000) which were reorganized by H school in Busan for pre-and post-test.
According to the purposes and methods of the study, the following two questions are presented:
First, is there any effect of the Dalcroze Music Education Program on the upper limb motor ability of the students with cerebral palsy?
Second, is there any difference in effect of the program on the upper limb motor ability of the students with cerebral palsy according to sub-areas?
The results were as follows:
First, scores of the upper limb test of the subjects improved both in the pre-test and post-test. Therefore, as the Dalcroze program induces movement of the upper limbs of the subjects, promotes actions of muscles or joints, it is demonstrated that it is an effective approach to improve motor ability. And it is effective in general improvement of upper limb motor ability in z-test as well as pre-test and post-test.
Second, the results of the z-test relating to improvement of sub-areas show a statistically significant difference in all the three areas except the spoilage. Thus, the program brings effective improvement of the upper limb motor ability in manipulation, arrival and application except the spoilage. However, as post-score of the ability is higher than pre-score, it is demonstrated that the program has a positive effect in improvement of upper limb motor ability of the students with cerebral palsy.
