Abstract
This research was designed to study the impact of mathematical activities using storybooks on young children’s mathematical problem solving ability. This study set the following research question to achieve the above research goal: How do mathematical activities using storybooks affect young children’s mathematical problem solving ability? Mathematical problem solving ability consists of the six sub-categories: classification concept, pattern concept, number concept, diagram concept, measurement concept, statistics concept. Thus, this research investigated the sub-categories of research questions as follows.
1. How do mathematical activities using storybooks affect young children’s classification concept?
2. How do mathematical activities using storybooks affect young children’s pattern concept?
3. How do mathematical activities using storybooks affect young children’s number concept?
4. How do mathematical activities using storybooks affect young children’s diagram concept?
5. How do mathematical activities using storybooks affect young children’s measurement concept?
6. How do mathematical activities using storybooks affect young children’s statistics concept?
The subjects of this study were 54 five-year-old children who were sampled from a kindergarten in Gwangju. The children were experimented in two groups: 27 children in an experimental group and 27 children in a control group. Children in an experimental group participated in learning activities using storybooks twice a week, a total of 20 times for ten weeks, and a control group participated in general learning activities.
In order to investigate young children’s mathematical problem solving ability, prior test-experiment-post test were conducted in sequence. Both the experimental group and the control group used the same test tools in the prior and post test. For the mathematical problem solving ability, this study used Ward(1993)’s tool which Hwang Jung-sook(1996) adapted and Ryu Hye-sook(2003) restructured. For the statistical analysis, ANCOVA was performed by using SPSS 11.0 statistics program.
The results of this research show that mathematical activities using story books influence on young children's problem solving activities. The results of sub-categories of the research are as follows.
First, mathematical activities using storybooks affect positively on improving classification concept. Second, mathematical activities using story books affect positively on improving pattern concept. Third, mathematical activities using story books affect positively on improving number concept. Fourth, mathematical activities using story books affect positively on improving diagram concept. On the other hand, measurement and statistics concepts showed no significant differences between two groups.
The results of this research showed mathematical activities using storybooks are more effective in improving the mathematical problem solving ability than general learning activities.
