Beethoven(1770-1827, Germany), “Variations on a Theme of Corelli, Op.42”, composed by S. Rachmaninoff(1873-1943, Russia), and “Mikrokosmos : No. 146 Ostinato” composed by B. Bartók(Béla Bartók, 1881-1945, Hungary), performed in my graduation recital for a master’s degree.
Beethoven, who is recognized as the greatest musician in the history of Western music, is regarded as a classical composer who not only gave flexibility to existing forms but also presented the future horizon of romanticism that comes at its ripe age. Beethoven's musical period, composed of 32 piano sonatas, is divided into early, mid and late period, and “Piano Sonata Op.2 No.3 in C Major”, is the work from the early stage which is 1795-1802, called the period of imitation or digestion.
S. Rachmaninoff, a late romantic composer, was a promising composer and pianist with a hand big enough to play up to 13th degrees. His last solo piano piece, “Variations on a Theme of Corelli Op.42“, was composed in 1932 in the United States where he was in exile, The theme of this piece is taken from ”Violin Sonata No.12 in
d minor, Op.5”, by Italian composer Corelli (1653-1713), This piece is a lyrical and colorful variations consisting of a total of 20 variations, an interrupting intermezzo, and final Coda.
Bartók who rose to the ranks of the top 20th century composers with his own style of music incorporating folk melodies and rhythms into modern music, collected and studied folk music not only in Hungary but also in Romania and Slovakia. “No. 146 Ostinato”, which this researcher is trying to study, is composed of 146 songs by Mikrokosmos, which consist of 153 songs composed between 1926 and 1937, features his own distinctive chromatic scale method. His chromatic scale composition method has roots in the Eastern ethnic music and the five-tone sound system.
