Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate factors that influence emergency room (ER) nurse’s violence response in general hospital. Methods: Participants were 131 nurses who worked in emergency medical center and emergency medical services of 1 university and 10 general hospitals in two cities in Korea. Data were collected using questionnaires that contained items on individual characteristic, violence experience, perceived stress, action taken after violence occurred, resilience, social support, and violence response. The data were analyzed by Descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson’s correlation, and hierarchical multiple regression analysis. Results: The results of this study showed that ER nurses frequently experience workplace violence. Verbal abuse was more frequent than physical or sexual violence. The most violence attacker was patient. perceived stress levels of 7.03 out of a possible ten points from workplace violence. The most frequent action taken by respondents after violence was seeking help from colleagues. The mean score for resilience (possible range=5 to 125) was 81.81±1.02, social support (possible range=5 to 100) was 74.21±1.40. Perceived stress and resilience shown to influence violence responses. Perceived stress and resilience accounted for 42.2% of variance for violence response. Conclusion: These results suggest that workplace violence is a serious problem for nurses. Thus, violence prevention program which focused perceived stress and resilience could help reduce violence stress.
