Abstract

Effect of Group Art Therapy with Korean Painting Material on Self-Expression of the Elder Dementia

With our society entering into aging society recently, dementia, one of the chronic diseases of the elderly people, is becoming a serious social problem. Dementia is a disease that requires comprehensive therapeutic approach. This study conducted group therapy utilizing Korean painting material on the elderly with dementia and provided an opportunity to express their ideas and emotions in an aim to help them to preserve and develop the existing functions by improving positive self-expression through mental stability and activation of long-term memory. The target of the study was 14 elderly people with mild dementia(8 belonging to experimental group and 6 belonging to comparative group) who were using J home care service center in K city. The study was conducted a total of 16 sessions, 60 minutes per session, once a week from July to October in 2015. For the study tool, the evaluations of art self-expression ability and communicational self-expression ability were conducted before and after, to investigate the changes in self-expression of the participants. For the data processing, repeated measurement ANOVA analysis using the SPSS 22.0 statistical program was conducted and the study separately examined the characteristics of changes in self-expression throughout the early, middle, and late stages and the characteristics of using color hanji(tradition Korean paper) and brushes. The results of the study are as follows. First, the art group therapy using Korean painting material had a positive effect on the art self-expression of the elderly with dementia. Second, the art group therapy using Korean painting material had a positive effect on the communicational self-expression of the elderly with dementia. As shown in the results, the art group therapy using Korean painting material is effective in improving the art and communicational self-expression of the elderly with dementia. Especially the characteristic of brushes that help free expression and the characteristic of color hanji that evokes emotional vitality had a positive effect on self-expression.|국문초록

본 연구는 한국화 매체를 활용한 집단미술치료가 치매노인의 자기표현에 미치는 효과에 대하여 알아보고자 하였다. 이는 치매노인에게 자신의 사고와 감정을 표현할 수 있는 기회를 제공함으로써 정서적 안정감을 주며, 장기기억의 활성화를 도와 긍정적 자기표현을 향상시켜 남아있는 기능을 보존하고 발전시킬 수 있도록 돕기 위해서이다. 연구 대상은 재가복지센터를 이용 중인 초기치매노인 14명(실험집단 8명, 비교집단 6명)으로 구성되었다. 연구기간은 2015년 7월부터 10월까지 매주 1회, 60분씩 총 16회에 걸쳐 실시하였다. 연구 도구는 대상자들의 자기표현 변화를 알아보기 위해 자기표현 척도인 미술적 자기표현(Art-Self Expression)능력 평가와 언어적 자기표현(Communicational-Self Expression)능력 평가를 사전·사후로 실시하였다. 자료처리는 SPSS 22.0 통계 프로그램으로 반복측정 변량분석을 실시하여 사전·사후의 변화를 비교하였으며, 초기·중기·후기 과정별 자기표현 변화 특성과 붓과 색한지를 사용했을 때의 특성을 구분지어 살펴보았다. 본 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 한국화 매체를 활용한 집단미술치료가 치매노인의 미술적 자기표현에 긍정적 효과가 있음을 알 수 있었으며, 미술적 자기표현 하위요인 5개중 4개에서 유의미한 차이를 보였다. 둘째, 한국화 매체를 활용한 집단미술치료가 치매노인의 언어적 자기표현에 긍정적 효과가 있음을 알 수 있었으며, 언어적 자기표현 하위요인에서 2개 모두 유의미한 결과를 보였다. 셋째, 프로그램 초기·중기·후기의 과정별 미술적·언어적 자기표현의 특성에서 중기 후반부에서부터 자기표현 효과가 의미 있게 나타나는 결과를 보였다. 넷째, 한국화 매체 중 붓을 사용했을 때와 색한지를 사용했을 때 자기표현의 특성에서 붓이 자유로운 심상표현을, 색한지가 정서적 활기를 돕는 매체임을 알 수 있었다.
