Abstract

Artists express some part of their inner side through art works. They express it by analogy of existing object or sometimes by imagination deeply hidden. No matter how it is expressed, I think artists figure out their needs and wants through expressing their inner world by art works. Then, they find psychological healing of their unsolved problems through this process. There must be many ways for artists to find their own inner side and needs, however, dream can be a key clue out of all. I often dream while sleeping and I constantly recall the space, emotions and atmosphere felt in the dream I had, and I try to find some meanings out of it. This is because I think that some suppressed desire and unsatisfied things from reality are represented again through dreams. According to Freud, our repressed desire is expressed in the form of dreams while sleeping, and some desire can be satisfied to some degree. He adds that the amount of suppressed desire can contribute to the source of culture and art. Hereupon, this study was motivated by my special interest in the human desire and psychology expressed in dreams. Actually, dreams are considerably subjective and abstract, for this reason, there are divers forms of interpretation and it is not easy to draw a sole conclusion. Therefore, in the first place, based on literature research, I inquired about the theoretical contents of dreams, and I considered some theoretical background knowledge regarding dreams, which had been out of my awareness. In particular, I inquired into the characteristics of dreams and desires dwelling in human subconsciousness, based on the theories of Carl Gustav Jung and Sigmund Freud. In the second place, I inquired about various works and artists whose materials were based on dreams, in order to figure out diverse way of expression of dreams, as well as how the artists developed their thoughts. In the last place, based on the research I have carried out, I intend to express the dreams in the shape of pottery, through figuring out the meaning of dreams, identifying the desire and making its images in different manners. For my art work, I mostly used clay and I did a coil forming, and after coloring with diverse chromatic pigments, I put transparent lye fluid on the surface. Some works are applied with threads, imitation diamonds, beads and tiles, so as to express a variety of dream stories. This study aims to express a new type of beauty by conveying my emotions and desires through the works based on my own dreams, by overcoming or accepting the problems discovered from my dreams, through which my interiority can be healed and my inner world can be creatively embodied.
