대학생 영어학습자들의 토익에 대한 인식 연구

Abstract

The aim of this study was to explore Korean EFL college students' perceptions about TOEIC and identified the differences in their perceptions based on their study areas and TOEIC scores. Furthermore, the study attempted to provide pedagogical insights into general TOEIC instruction with students of diverse study majors and TOEIC levels of proficiency. To these ends, 380 students at three universities participated in the study. A self-report questionnaire was used to measure the students' thoughts about TOEIC. The questionnaire contained 39 items in a 5-point Likert scale (1=strongly disagree, 5=strongly agree). The collected data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, factor analysis, and t-tests. Results identified seven factors in the students' perceptions about TOEIC: Practicality of TOEIC, TOEIC and improving English skills, ways to study TOEIC, basic English proficiency for TOEIC skills, ways to improve TOEIC scores, effectiveness of TOEIC instruction, and general perceptions about English learning. The participant students were divided into two sub-groups by their major in order to investigate effects of study areas: humanities vs. science and engineering. The results showed that the differences only in basic English proficiency for TOEIC skills were statistically significant (t=2.495, p=.013). The student participants also divided into two groups in terms of their scores on the TOEIC tests: higher vs. lowers. The higher group showed significantly higher scores on the items about ways to improve TOEIC scores than the lower group (t=-2.475, p=.014). Based on the findings teaching implications and directions for further studies were suggested.
