- Abstract
- Purpose: There has been a rapid increase in population with diverse cultural background in Korea. To examine cultural competence for Korean nurses, three scales, Inventory for Assessing the Process of Cultural Competence among healthcare professionals (Campinha-Bacote, 1999), The Caffrey Cultural Competence in Healthcare Scale (Caffrey et al., 2005), Cultural Competence Assessment (Schim et al., 2003), have been mostly used by Korean researchers. There is a lack of evidence of psychometric validation for the scales, however, the Cultural Competence Assessment (Schim et al., 2003) scale is the only tool that has been reported the psychometric validation by the researchers. The purpose of this study was to examine the psychometric validation of the Cultural Competence Assessment Scale in korean.
Methods: Two hundred sixty six nurses were recruited in the University hospital in G city for this study. Cultural Competence was measured using Cultural Competence Assessment scale developed by Schim and her colleagues (2003).
Results: Item-to-total correlations and exploratory factor analysis were investigated to test construct validity. Through principal componant analysis, two factors were identified that explained 53.4% of the variance. Internal consistency was supported by Cronbach`s alpha of .91.
Conclusion: The results of this exploratory study showed different factor structures compared to those of original Cultural Competence Assessment scale by Schim et al (2003). The development of cultural competence scale is needed to identify cultural needs for population with diverse cultural backgrounds in korea.
