A. Scriabin(Alexander Nikolaevich Scriabin, 1872-1915) is considered to be one of the representative Russian composers during a transitional period from the 19th to the 21st century.
The transitional features are shown not only in his early romantic works, but also in his works at a later time when he used the unique forms of mystic chord.
The early works of Scriabin contain his distinctive chord and reflect the Liszt glamour and lyrical features, which were influenced by Chopin.
Piano sonata No. 2, also known as ‘Sonata Fantasy’, is completed in 1879 and composed of two g# minor movements.
Although these two movements do not share any thematic correlation, the relation can be described as ‘a question’ and ‘an answer’. The Sonata Fantasy is one of the masterpieces of Scriabin's early works; showing improvements in musical content, expression, and implementation compare to Piano Sonata No. 1.
The first movement, the Andante sonata, has an allegro form and its first theme is delicately related with ‘the fate motif’ of Beethoven. The second theme of the first movement is expressed by the canon technique in the development section and is of greater importance.
The second movement, Presto, is unique and outstanding music with its tight rhythm and also closely combined with ‘the fate motif’.
The early piano music form is well established in the piano sonata No. 2 and the purpose of this paper is to analyze the features of melody, rhythm and chord.
In order to do this, this paper will discuss the origin of sonata per period in the musical history and the changes of the characteristics in ten major piano sonatas to examine the musical features of Scriabin. This analysis will shed new light on him and his role in musical history.
