Abstract
Interest in sustainability and improving the quality of living has brought changes in the measurement and judgement for the quality of living. Non-economic pleasantness, quality, aestheticism, and mentality have been considered important measurements. From such a perspective, a qualitative and logical approach to space has been needed and space as an important concept to do this has been suggested. The concept of space is acquired through experience where humans perceive and recognize their environment and generate an image of it which delivers an appropriate meaning from the space. This can be a way to experience a space.
This study aimed to understand the process of place experience and image formation factors for place experience and the method of the images generated of urban parks in terms of place experience. In particular, this study selected urban parks as the subject of the study as they are social indexes to judge the quality of living and fields of diverse activities in modern society and places where spacial experiences are considered more important.
Chapter 2 looked at the concept of location and the relationship between placeness and place experience and the perception process of place experience to explain the structure of image formation as media for placeness formation. Chapter 3 obtained image forming factors for place experience through a bibliographical and case review. Chapter 4 analysed methods for image formation using the image formation factors obtained in Chapter 3 as a frame for analysis and tested these to obtain the conclusions in Chapter 5. As a result, the following are presented:
First, the idea of a placeness is obtained through interaction of a physical spatial subject with human activity and perceptions through sensory experience is an important characteristic in placeness formation. Second, as a result of examining the perception process of place experience, it was explained that image formation in a space can be a medium to perceive the place. Based on the Theory of Spacial Perception presented by Hildebrand, this study obtained an image formation structure through visual experience-oriented image formation and physical experience-oriented image formation. The visual experience-oriented image formation which visualizes the implied values of space is realized through the formation of symbols and centripetality. The physical experience-oriented image formation is realized through sequence formation which forms diverse spacial experiences according to physical movement and the formation of a space for activities and programs. Third, as a result of analysing the method of image formation for a place, the symbol formation involving visual experience-oriented image formation is characterized by emotional symbol formation where semantic factors are experienced and organic symbol formation according to changes in time.
The centripetality is internally formed by open and continuous contact points and forms images by visualizing the characteristics of green tracts as well as internally form poly-centric spacial images by areas of decision with diverse sizes.
As for the physical experience-oriented image formation method, the flow line forms a continuous flow through diverse channels, but it has a non-linear and multi-layered structure. Space for activities and programs provides physical spaces for users where they can have direct relationships with one another. The present program can be applied based on the configuration and spacial characteristics of the preserved facilities, where space for activities integrates time and memory to form peculiar images.
