F. Chopin Piano Sonata Op. 58의 분석과 Edition 비교 연구: Paderewski판, Breitkopf & Härtel판을 중심으로

Abstract

This study aims to analyse Chopin's Piano Sonata No.3 Op.58 in b minor as one of the music pieces performed for graduation solo concerts. Frédéric François Chopin(1810-1849) was a composer and pianist from Poland. Anton Grigoryevich Rubinstein(1829-1894), a Russian composer and pianist, called him 'a poet of the piano.’ Most of his music, which amounts to 200 pieces, was designed for piano. He composed three piano sonatas, of which Sonata No. 1 has many weakness in terms of its musical conception. However, Sonata No. 1 and No. 2 were based on refined composition principles and a firm logic style, and are excellent pieces of music full of poetic lyricism and dramatic appeal. Sonata No. 3 which was composed in the period when he was most mature in mentality in 1844 is more organic, uniform, and magnificent than Sonata No. 2 . It is composed of four movements: The Allegro Maestoso first movement, the Scherzo 2nd movement, a Largo third movement, and a Rondo Finale fourth movement, and they have Chopin's peculiar techniques and beautiful melodies. Chopin's Sonata No. 3 is one of the pieces of music which has been frequently played for records or live performances and many musicologues have studied it. So, a variety of editions have been published according to the interpretations and opinions of different editors. There are approximately two reasons why editions exist: One, music is recorded through research for record preservation. The other is that music is recorded with the intent to let it be known widely. The former is usually intended in terms of publicity and is based on exact recording of the original text. For the latter, the original text is considered precious, but errors are sometimes revised or reworked for better musical expression. As the purposes are different, there are differences in reasons why each edition exists. This study compared the Instytut Fryderyka Chopina edition edited by Paderewski with the Breitkopf & Härtel edition focusing on thematic symbols, phrasing, and rhythms. As a result, it was discovered that the Breitkopf & Härtel edition has more thematic symbols than the Padrewski edition and the phrasing or dynamic of the two editions were considerably different according to the editors. To refine the musical expression, errors can be revised and performance norms or symbols can be changed through edits of musical notes. For an exact performance, it is necessary to compare and study the edited notes through precise research and examination.
