Objectives: The current research focused on premature infants mothers needs of discharge education with the perception of educational performance of nurses and explored to see if there was a difference between the two. We also strived to discover the factors that affect the two and supply the newfound information as fundamental data to enhance future discharge education programs.
Methods: The subjects for the current research were 54 premature infant (gestational age of under 37 weeks) mothers hospitalized in the neonatal intensive care unit at K general hospital in G metropolitan city. The data was collected between June 9 and September 30, 2014 through self-recording surveys. The collected data was then analyzed using t-tests, ANOVA, and multiple regression through SPSS 21.0.
Results: Premature infant mothers’ needs of discharge education was 4.21±0.60 on a 5 point scale and the educational performance of nurses was 3.95±0.73 on a 5 point scale. There was a significant difference between abnormal symptom monitoring and management (P=.001), excrement management (P=.004), growth development (P=.007) and premature infant mothers’ needs of discharge education was greater when vaginal delivery (B=.315, p=.049) and among the first (B=.597, p=.014) birth order. Nurses were more likely to perform the education program when the premature infant mother was accompanied by a baby sitter (B=.789, p=.001). Also, there was no difference between the premature infants mothers needs of discharge education and educational performance of nurses when a baby sitter was present (B=-.638, p=.020).
Conclusions: Discharge education should focus not only on offering information to mothers of premature infants based on their characteristics and demand but also take into factor the discrepancy between hospital discharge education demand and how the premature infant mothers perceive nurses to actively perform the education program. Developing a detailed and meticulous program would allow premature infant mothers to take better care of their premature infants and boost the development of the premature infants. Active nurse mediation must be taken into consideration to ensure such a program will work.
