Abstract
With increase in the worldwide demand for flight transportation and the emergence of low-cost airlines, the aircraft accidents due to meteorological causes are becoming more likely to happen. Therefore, it is necessary to study the meteorological phenomena related to the flight operation obstacles.
In this study, the relationship between flight delay and cancellation and meteorological phenomena in three representative airports (Incheon International Airport, Gimpo International Airport, and Jeju International Airport) was examined to analyze the effects of the meteorological causes on the flight operation obstacles and their characteristics by international airports in Korea. The analysis data included the aircraft delay and cancellation data of the Incheon International Airport Corporation and Korea Airports Corporation and the AMOS data of the Korea Aviation Meteorological Agency. Based on the data, the major causes of aircraft delay and cancellation and the recent meteorological causes that affected the flight operation by airports were analyzed.
The aircraft delay and cancellation due to the meteorological causes are becoming more frequent, and the causes are the meteorological phenomena related to visibility, fog being the most frequent, followed by snowfall and rainfall, in that order. The spatio-temporal analysis was conducted to analyze the effects of the meteorological phenomena such as fog, snowfall and rainfall. The duration of the meteorological phenomena that caused delay and cancellation was generally short, and meteorological phenomena often caused abnormal operation when they were severe. In addition, abnormal operations often occurred due to fog in the high atmospheric pressure condition with stable atmosphere, snowfall in the low atmospheric pressure condition with warm air advection, and rainfall in the synoptic-type stationary front condition.
