- Abstract
- The purpose of this study is to examine the association between life stress, self-efficacy, and health promotion behavior among some university students. The subjects of this study were 580 university students in Gwangju Metropolitan City. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire, which composed of general characteristics, school-related characteristics, frequency and importance of life stress experience, self-efficacy, and a health promotion lifestyle profile. The used analysis methods were independent ttest, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation, and multiple regression analysis.
The descriptive statistics of frequency and importance of life stress experience, self-efficacy and health promotion behavior were 55.0±27.8, 71.5±31.3, 74.1±9.5 and 125.2±19.5 respectively. For correlation between life stress, self-efficacy, and health promotion behavior, the frequency of life stress experience (r=.106, p<0.05), the importance of life stress experience (r=.165, p<0.01) and self-efficacy (r=.229, p<0.01) were statistically significantly correlated with health promotion behavior. When a year, the presence of a girl/boy friend, subjective household economic levels, and subjective health conditions were controlled, the frequency of life stress experience (β=.115, p<0.01), the importance of life stress experience (β=.103, p<0.01), and self-efficacy (β=.614, p<0.01) were statistically significantly associated with health promotion behavior.
In conclusion, this study showed that the experience and importance of life stress and self-efficacy had positive effects on health promotion behavior. Further research should be needed to explore the association between stress and health promotion behavior in more detail. Also, positive effects on stress should be researched.
