Abstract

ABSTRACT Cognitive Function Test of the Aged by MMSE

The research was conducted with the urban and rural people with a low income aged 65years and above. The study population of 200 was surveyed based on MMSE-DS of Korean Cognitive Function Test.

The study participants living in Nam-gu, Gwangju city and the rural area, Naju city have recieved medical care and they are in the second highest socioecomic status aged 65 and over approved by National Health Insurance Corporation, The study population of interest is patient aged 66years and above in the second highest socioeconomic group approved by National Health Insurance Corporation who has received medical care and lives in Namgu, Gwangju and Naju.

The survey was performed from 1st of June, 2013 to 31st of October, 2013. The Participants have chronic or progressive brain disease due to the functional disorder of the high part of cortex, Which plays the key role in memory, thinking, orientation, understanding, calculation, learning, linguistic, and judgment. The incidence and prevalence of these brain disease are related with region, sex, education, age, and occupation. MMSE-DS Test is the method us most used method in dementia management project from the health centers of all parts of the country through the Ministry of Health and Welfare, and the data analysis has been treated by IBM SPSS statistics 21.0 statistical program.

The credibility of the research was analyzed by Cronbach’s alpha coefficient. Here is the result of our research. Cognitive Function Test based on the demographic property showed that men is far superior to women. The participants educated for 7 to 12 years got the highest score and the participants educated less than 3 years got the lowest score Cognitive Function Test.

As the age increases, Cognitive Function Test score decreases. The farmers had the lowest cognitive function test score, whereas office workers and the self-employed had higher than the other. On the other hand, there was no statistically significant distinction between different regions in the subordinate test result.

However, the subordinate test results indicated a significant difference among orientation (t=2.306, p=0.023), attention concentration (t=6.457, p<0.001), and linguistic function (t=2.167, p=0.032). The subordinate test result on education period made a significant difference between attention concentration and calculation (K=7.887, p=0.048), and memory retrieval (K=25.423, p<0.001). In addition, the subordinate test on the different ages provided no significant difference among all subordinate items except attention concentration and calculation (K= 33.963, p<0.001). In conclusion, the result of Cognitive Function Test was not influenced by regions or occupations, however, sex, age, and educational level disparity made the significant difference in the test result.
