Nursing needs and related factors among some admitted Hansen elderly patients and nurses

Purpose: This study was performed to compare the perceived nursing needs as reported by admitted Hansen elderly patients and nurses.

Methods: The participants were 100 patients and 41 nurses in Sorokdo national hospital. The instruments were constructed based on a prior study review and revised after a pilot study. The questionnaire for nursing needs included questions on physical, psychosocial and nursing information domains. Data were collected in August 2011 for patients and July 2012 for nurses. Nursing needs were compared with t-test, ANOVA, correlation and multiple regression analysis.

Results: Perceived nursing needs by nurses were significantly higher than what was reported by patients. Psychosocial needs were highest and nursing information needs were the second highest. Patients’ physical nursing needs were associated with places for treatment, degree of pain and ADL (Activities of Daily Living) score. And psychosocial nursing needs were associated with places for treatment and degree of pain. Finally psychological nursing needs were associated with places for treatment, the number of chronic disease and degree of pain.

Conclusions: There were some gaps between patients’ and nurses’ nursing needs. It may improve the quality of nursing to identify the nursing needs of patients and provide nursing care according to the patients’ needs.
