Change of nursing activities and emotional state for DNR in some nurses

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the awareness, experience, and change of emotional state and nursing activities associated with DNR (Do-Not-Resuscitate) of nurses.

Methods: The study subjects were 243 nurses in one of University Hospitals. General characteristics, awareness, experience, emotional state and nursing activities were collected using self-reported questionnaires between August 1 and August 15, 2012. Descriptive analysis was performed to assess the awareness, experience and nursing activities. And t-test and ANOVA were performed to access the change of emotional state after DNR experience.

Results: Most of the participants (98.8%) responded that DNR was necessary. The major reason for the necessity of DNR was the impossibility of recovery (53.3%). The decision to have a DNR order was most frequently made by patients and family members. Most of the participants (94.2%) responded that a guidebook for DNR in hospitals is necessary. The mean score of emotional state was 53.9±±6.76. It was associated with DNR enforcement of the family and the DNR decision time from hospitalization.

Conclusion: This study showed the change of nursing activities and emotional state in nurses. These results may help to care DNR patients in university hospitals.
