Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of the study is to develop a smartphone application as an educational learning instrument for coronary artery disease patients and to assess users’ level of satisfaction. Methods: This methodological research involves elicited learning content for coronary artery disease patients to develop a learning instrument using smartphone apps and the development of an educational smartphone application. This research was developed according to the Assessment, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation (ADDIE) model, which is a systematic instructional design model. The level of satisfaction of the developed smartphone application was assessed via questionnaires completed by 30 coronary artery disease outpatients during their visit to cardiology outpatient department. Results: The learning content was investigated through literature review associated with education for coronary artery disease patients and searching for medical smartphone applications that are already available; learning plans were developed; and a smartphone app developer was commissioned to develop a smartphone educational application, interacting with research team and create creating a final version of application. Learning content for an educational smartphone application includes six primary learning content such as definition of coronary artery disease, coronary artery disease, daily life management, risk factors, medication regimens, dietary management, workout management, and five secondary learning content—statistics, patient cases, my risk of developing coronary artery disease, precaution tips, and quiz. Also, an initially developed application was revised through feedback from experts in terms of the extent and usefulness of learning content. In evaluating usefulness of smartphone application, most of respondents (more than 80%) was reported as satisfactory tool. Conclusions: The developed educational smartphone application can be used both on the iPhone App Store and the Android Market. It is likely that the developed application may play a role as educational media to obtain information for coronary artery disease patients, and that the patients may utilize the application as a supporting material Without limitations of time and space.
