Effects of Smilax china L Extracts on Colorectal Cancer Cells

Objective : This study aims to find the effects of the anti-cancer activity of Smilax china L extract in colorectal cancer cells.

Methods : MTS assay was used to detect the effects of Smilax china L extracts on the viability of colorectal cancer cells. Western Blotting was used to see the effects of Smilax china L extracts on inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) expression.

Results : Methanol extracts of Smilax china L reduced colorectal cancer cells depending on time and concentration. Also it reduced iNOS expression in he concentration of 600μg/ml.

MTS assay results, 1. Methanol extracts of Smilax china L reduced colorectal cancer cells depending on time.

2. Methanol extracts of Smilax china L reduced colorectal cancer cells depending concentration. Cell survival rate dramatically decrease depending on time and concentration especially, as it significantly reduced by 97% at 400μg/ml.

3. Hot water extracts of Smilax china L reduced colorectal cancer cells depending on time.

4. Hot water extracts of Smilax china L reduced colorectal cancer cells depending on the concentration. Cell survival rate decreased by 45% at 400μg/ml, depending on time and concentration.

Western blot results ae as follows; 5. Methanol extracts of Smilax china L reduced inducible Nitric Oxide Synthase (iNOS) expression by 40% at 200μg/ml. 6. Hot water extracts of Smilax china L did not reduce inducible Nitric Oxide Synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) expressions at any concentration.

Conclusion : Methanol extracts of Smilax china L significantly reduced cell viability by 97% of human colorectal cancer cell lines at 400μg/ml and iNOS expression by 40% at 200 μg/ml. Hot water extracts of Smilax china L did not reduce the expression of iNOS at any concentration.

Methanol extracts of Smilax china L implied that it was expected that isolation and purification tests could bring out more various clinical effects.
