The purpose of this study is to reveal what fatherhood experience divorced men have in nurturing their children and it adopts the method of in-depth interview to search for the meaning and essence of their true fatherhood experience and suggests a theoretical model concerning paternal experience and ultimately social-welfare alternatives for them from the policy aspects.
I asked social-welfare centers and related ones which are in charge of providing service for one-parent family and selected men who aged from 47 to 50 have been divorced more than five years and brought up their teenage boys and carried out a qualitative research of insider's view.
And the result is as follow.
Fatherhood experience of divorced men was fatherhood absence in their marriage life and they chose fatherhood when they were on divorce process. And they started to realize the essence of paternity during raising their children and quickly got accustomed to it. And then they focused on fatherhood that forms a strong bond with their children and acquired their paternal identity in the end. Obstacles to this process of fatherhood experience were experience from their original family, his ex-wife who increases pain, poor social environment, difficulties to nurture, the absence of mother for children. It was revealed that divorced men used for their fatherhood experience some strategies such as the positive acceptance of helps provided from neighbors, the possibility of hope, desire of their children's success and making a stable family.
This result suggests the need of special programs for one-parent family, which aims to help them to overcome suffering from divorce and nurture their children. In addition, alternative programs for motherhood and cure programs where their original family get together are also required and all of that should be contributed to improving the quality of life of divorced men, added by social-welfare assistance of the social and national level.
This study has some significance in providing fundamental but important information to help divorced men to develop their fatherhood experience in more positive ways.
