Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the clinical and radiological outcomes of proximal, middle and distal third humeral fractures treated with the minimally invasive plate osteosynthesis (MIPO). Materials and Methods: A retrospective study of 19 patients with the proximal, middle or distal third humeral fractures underwent MIPO from April 2010 to April 2011. There were 3 men and 16 women with an average age of 56.6 years. The radiological outcomes of bony union and anatomical reduction were evaluated. The clinical outcomes were assessed by measuring the Korea shoulder society (KSS) score, Mayo elbow performance (MEP) score and the postoperative complications. Results: Fracture union was obtained in 18 patients at an average of 16.2 weeks, including 2 cases of delayed union. The radiologic results were showed 1.8 degree of valgus angulation and 1.6 degree of posterior angulation. The average KSS score of all cases were 91 and the average MEP score was 82.5. There were 4 complications; 1 case of nonunion, 1 case of radial nerve palsy, 1 case of partial shoulder ankylosis and 1 case of elbow stiffness. Conclusion: MIPO technique for proximal, middle and distal third humeral fractures is one of the good treatment methods which is provided satisfactory clinical and radiological outcomes considering high union rate and minor complications.
