This study aims to identify the relations between social support for cancer patients in radiotherapy from family and medical personnel and their living quality. The subjects of the study were 199 cancer patients who were having radiotherapy at the radiation therapy department of a university hospital in Seoul and the study lasted from January 25 to April 30, 2012. They were interviewed with a use of questionnaire and the questionnaire was composed of the followings: 11 socio-demographic questions on sex, age, marriage and education, 7 ones on medical care including nurses, medical insurance, transfer and prevalence period, 12 ones on family support, 12 ones on support from medical personnel and 20 ones on social support and living quality. The study conducted a t-test, an ANOVA, a correlations test and a multi-regression test using SPSS/WIN 18.0 for the data collected to identify the relations between independent variables including social supports and living quality as a subordinate variable, and the results are presented as follows:

1. The mean score of the family support was 39.7 ± 9.3, that of the medical personnel was 39.5 ± 8.2, and that of living quality was 57.0 ± 8.6.

2. There were significant relations between social support and living quality according to sex, education, religion, occupation, monthly income, diseases, financial support, nurses, private insurance and transfer of cancer, but there were no significant relations between them according to age, marriage, residence place, types of medical insurance, types of living together, prevalence period, and types of therapy.

3. There were significant relations between family and medical personnel support and living quality.

4. When a multi-regression test was conducted with education, religion, occupation, monthly income, medical insurance, financial support, nurses, and private medical insurance as independent variables and living quality as a subordinate variable, the higher family support was, the higher living quality was, and there were significant relations between types of medical insurance and financial support.

In conclusion, the higher family support the cancer patients perceived, the higher their living quality was, which indicates that there were significant relations between them. Therefore, it is suggested that to enhance living quality of cancer patients in radiotherapy, intervention strategies which can reinforce family or social support should be developed and the living quality should be subdivided for further studies with various angles.
