ABSTRACT

The Association of Stress Coping and Interpersonal Relationships on Quality of Life in Patients with Schizophrenia

This study aimed was performed to identify the relationships between stress coping, interpersonal relationships, and quality of life (QOL) in patients with schizophrenia. The study subjects were 103 in patients with in a National psychiatric hospital. The questionnaire composed of general characteristics, the Ways of Coping Check list, scales of interpersonal relationship and the Korean version of WHO Quality of Life Scale were applied. The used statistical methods were t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation analysis and stepwise multiple regression for identifying the variables which are influencing on the QOL.
The results are as follows;
1) There is no relationship of the QOL with the general characteristics and characteristics related mental illness.
2) There are statistically positive correlation of the QOL with the stress coping strategies and interpersonal relationships.
3) In the results of stepwise multiple regression, there are statistically significant relationships of the QOL with the active stress coping strategies, satisfying relationship, and communication factor. In the physical health factor, the relationship between the communication and satisfying factor is significant. Active coping and satisfying relationship in the psychological health factor, active coping and understanding, sensibility, and trust of relationship in the social relation factor, active coping and communication in the environment factor, active coping and satisfying relationship in the general factor are also related respectively.
In conclusion, the QOL of schizophrenic patients is influenced by the stress coping strategies and interpersonal relationships. It is necessary that the psychosocial rehabilitation programs which aim to develop stress coping skills and to facilitate relationships should be developed and provided during the treatment and rehabilitation phases for schizophrenic patients.
