Abstract
Disasters are frequently occurring around the world due to the abnormal weather conditions, including the tropical cyclone, heavy rainfall, cold wave and heat wave, which are partly because of the climate changes due to the global warming. Diverse signs of climate changes are shown in Korea, too. To reduce the damage by climate-related natural disasters, it is essential to examine the detailed climate change characteristics and establish strategies to properly adapt to and address the climate changes. The understanding of the climatic characteristics and long-term change trend is preliminary to efficiently address the energy supply, urban design, water resource control, and climate-related natural disaster reduction. In this study, the climate change characteristics were analyzed with the climate extreme events related to the temperature of the Gwangju·Jeonnam area.
The results of the analysis of climate values of the Gwangju·Jeonnam area for the past 38 years (1973 ?C 2010) showed that the mean, maximum and minimum temperatures increased at rates of 0.019→/year, 0.020→/year, and 0.017→/year, respectively, and the amount of precipitation increased at a rate of 3.526 ?L/year. Among the climate extreme events, the number of frost days(FD) decreased at a rate of -0.168 day/year, which indicated that the winter period decreased. The decrease in the winter period was highest in Yeosu. The intra-annual extreme temperature range (ETR) decreased at a rate of -0.029→/year and so did the diurnal range. In particular, the upper limit of the minimum air temperature increased. Goheung contributed the most to the decrease. The rate of warm nights (TN90) increased at a rate of 0.040%, which indicated that the temperature was higher than the normal values in an increasing number of days. The increase was most significantly influenced by Wando. The growing season length (GSL) increased at a rate of 0.279 day/year. The increase in the GSL indicated that there might be changes in the vegetation zone, which require changes in the cultivated plants. The increase was most significantly influenced by Yeosu. The highest warm spell duration indicator (HWDI) increased at a rate of 0.053 day/year, which implied an increase in the summer duration and in the highest temperature. The increase in the HWDI was most significantly influenced by Wando.
The results of the analysis of the five temperature-related events among the extreme temperature events presented by WMO showed the warming and climate changes in Gwangju·Jeonnam area. The analysis results of extreme temperature events showed the climate changes more clearly than those of general climate factors. The changes in warm nights, GSL and HWDI were used to estimate the trend of the climate change. It is expected that the results of this study will contribute to the response to the changes in the lifestyle and vegetation due to the climate changes.
