This study was performed to identify the relations between empowerment and job satisfaction among some clinical nurses. The study subjects were 402 clinical nurses in a university hospital and surveyed with a self-administered questionnaire from October 5 to 12, 2011. The questionnaire was composed of socio-demographic characteristics, job-related factors, and scales of empowerment, job stress and job satisfaction. The used statistical methods were t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlations analysis and multiple regression analysis. The results are presented as follows:
1. The mean score of empowerment was 2.99±0.46, and score of support domain was 3.15±0.56, which was the highest. The mean score of job satisfaction was 2.96±0.47.
2. There were significant differences in scores of empowerment according to socio-demographic and job-related factors including age, marital status, educational level, total careers, careers at present department, job position, working section, working types, monthly income, number of nurses in the working section and nursing satisfaction. Job satisfaction was significantly related with age, marital status, educational level, total careers, career at present department, job position, working types, monthly income, and nursing satisfaction.
3. Job satisfaction had statistically significant positive correlations with empowerment, while having statistically significant negative correlations with job stress. There were statistically significant positive correlations between opportunity, information, support and resources as domains of empowerment and job satisfaction.
4. As a result of multiple regression analysis, empowerment was statistically significant associated with job satisfaction after adjustments of general characteristics and job stress.
In conclusion, empowerment has a significant relation wit job satisfaction. It is suggested that the enhancement of empowerment of nurses can be an important strategy to manage human resources in the hospital, and the educational programs with the concept of empowerment should be developed.
