Factors associated with depression in some inpatients with tuberculosis

Objective: This study was performed to investigate the prevalence of depression and the associated factors with depression inpatients with tuberculosis (TB). Methods: The study subjects were 221 inpatients with TB who received chemotherapy at National TB Hospital. We collected general characteristics, disease-related factors, illness perception and depression status using self-reported questionnaires during September and October 2011. Depression was assessed by CES-D questionnaires. Chi-square test, t-test and multiple logistic regressions were performed to evaluate the association between subjects’ characteristics and depression. Results: Of 221 patients, 193 (87.3%) patients were male and the mean age was 49.4±13.1. The prevalence of depression was 124 (56.1%). In simple analysis, household income, pack-year, number of hospitalizations, experience of TB recovery, arbitrary interruption of TB medication, type of drug regimen, resistance to TB drug and illness perception were associated with depression. In multiple logistic regressions, subjects with younger age, lower household income, higher pack-years, 2nd line drug regimen and higher illness perception were more likely to have depression. Conclusions: Age, household income, pack-years, 2nd medication and illness perception were associated with depression in inpatients with tuberculosis. The patient management considering the results of this study will help to lower the burden of depression in TB patients.
