Abstract

The cancer incidence is rapidly increasing all over the world. Cancer is the number one domestic cause of death, and the cancer incidence in Korea also has reached a very serious level. As a disease, cancer is incurable when being diagnosed with that makes people have a fear of death. It is impacts a person's entire life by lowering her physical, psychological, social, economical, and spiritual conditions. The cancer incidence is continually increasing and its cancer death is 144.4 per 100,000 people, according to the National Center for Health Statistics.(2010) Cancer affects its patients physically: pain, tiredness, exhaustion, impotent fatigue, nausea, vomiting, desolation and pins and needles are some of the side effects that could occur during treatment. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of foot reflexology massage using aroma therapy, a part of alternative medicine. It aims to determine whether the use of aroma oils improve the sleep and pain condition among patients who are either currently receiving a foot reflexology massage or in need of one. Study gathered a rather insufficient information on the methods of cancer care, available to the patients, were applied to cancer patients. Aroma foot massages to strengthen their immunity, alleviate sleep and stress, and give confidence of healing to the patients and their givers. I checked a variety of literature on foot care blended. and gained trusts from the patients with textbook sources that are reliable. I confirmed that the effects of foot reflexology massage using aroma oils for improving sleep and pain in cancer patients are positive. (The method did not require any machine and the subject sample was randomized) I introduced the massage as a whole-man healing system to the patients who had only believed in medicinal care, and I hope it would contribute to reliving the pain of many cancer patients.
