Abstract
The purpose of this study is to explore the parental attitude toward bilingual education through qualitative research methods. Korea is evolving from a mono lingual nation to a multicultural society. Accordingly the Korean goverment's interest in multicultural families and their children have risen. In particular, the language education for children of multicultural families is becoming a problem in many different areas and a lot of institutions are striving to alleviate this problem. As exchange between countries become more frequent throughout the globe, knowledge on multicultural and multilingual issues are considered very important. In spite of this however, the majority of language education programs for Korean multicultural children and learned towards assimilation-type Korean language education and bilingual education programs that are currently in place also are fixed in an assililation-type of policy.
This research sees that in order for Korean society to advance into a positive multicultural society, there needs to be a deviation from this form of assimilation-type Korean language education and a new education plan that allows for a strong command of dual language as well as a way to promote understanding between cultures. Therefore, while keeping the close relationship between language and culture in mind, this research aims to seek a plan for bilingual education that will promote understanding between cultures as well as allow for a strong command of bilingual use.
In order to deduct this, related previous research and theoretical background work on bilingualism, bilingual education and multicultural education was considered beforehand to determine the validity and the goal of this research.
Also, in order to comprehend the current status of the children of multicultural families in Korea, statistical data and literature from Korean governmental agencies were reviewed. In final, a survey was conducted among mothers who have multicultural children's language education and the awareness of bilingual education. In the process the opinions regarding implementation of bilingual education was also surveyed.
Theoretical organization, relevant literature and statistic review and the results from the conducted survey were put together to deduce an adequate multiculturalistic bilingaul education plan and the research is concluded with a discussin on further research direction.
