Human lifestyles or ideas have been closely related to natural environment they live. Geomancy has been handed down as emotional gene in our life for a long time, but its evaluation in our life showed remarkable differences between positive and negative. Literatures of geomancy also show opposite views that it was considered as superstition to tell fortune of buildings, the grave for the dead and the space for the living or as systematic recognition pattern of topography based on traditional experiential science. But some recent studies try to interpret geomancy as the law of nature in the relation between human and nature from oriental view. This study accepted and described it as traditional science equipped with its own rationality and system from positive view because it is impossible to make perfect statement of nature with today's science.
The land where we live is the field of our life, the foundation of buildings we reside and the space of our life and invisible world of our life can be applied to it. The ground is not material object only for economic investment but has an immanent order system called the invisible law of nature. Therefore, it must be considered with rational and scientific recognition and the inner essence of the land should be recognized. Keeping it in mind, this study aims to examine how to apply geomancy to programming and layout plan in the process of designing buildings using Chi-Gi convergence place (Chi-Gi Hyoul Pan), the core of geomancy.
Chi-Gi hyoul pan is about the essence of invisible thing on the ground. Our ancestors applied it to many aspects of life including selection and layout of the capital, the village and house location and grave. But, as the modernization began and we went through the Japanese colonial era, geomancy was prohibited as taboo. It is assumed that it was caused by its lack of scientific materials and proofs. While conventional geomancy was applied to agricultural society of low density, how to apply it to modern artificial environment of high density might be a focus of the research.
This study focuses on examining how to apply propitious site for grave of geomancy to layout plan. When geomancy is applied to building layout plan, propitious site for grave and the site of good Chi-gi or bad one should be distinguished. Literatures on finding the site of good Chi-gi and avoiding that of bad Chi-gi include the geographical features theory and is the East Asian’ compass theory. This study suggested that theory of sensing Chi-gi as a kind of radiesthesia could be applied to building layout plan. The theory of sensing Chi-gi is able to find out Chi-gi without any topographical, directional and spatial restrictions of mountains and rivers. Also the cases of using it can be confirmed in Korea, Japan and China. In addition, Chi-gi hyoul pan which is found to give fortune can be suggested by form and size. It is considered that form and size of Chi-gi hyoul pan be approached with systemicity in applying it to buildings.
This study presented the application of Chi-gi hyoul pan to main gate in building layout plan to make it one of building layout factors. Application of Chi-gi hyoul pan to building layout plan can meet need for using order system immanent in the land through emotional gene in us based on relationship between human, nature and building. And Chi-gi hyoul pan of geomancy will be a practical alternative in applying it to building layout plan.
