Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop a team based simulation learning program and to evaluate this program's effect on undergraduate nursing students.
Method: In the phase of program development the learning objectives were three clinical situation scenarios involving patients with respiratory, simulation flow sheets and checklists for a team based simulation learning program. For the phase of program evaluation, pre-post quasi-experimental design was used to investigate the effects of a team based simulation learning program on interpersonal understanding, problem solving ability, and academic achievement. The participants were 63 undergraduate nursing students recruited from the C university in G city. 32 students were assigned to an experimental group and 31 students to a control group. The experimental group was given the team based simulation learning program for 5 weeks from October through November of 2011, whereas a case study was given to the control group. Data were collected using a questionnaire which included interpersonal understanding, problem solving ability and academic achievement. The data were analyzed by t-test, x2-test, Fisher's exact probability test with SPSS win 17.0 program.
Result: A team based simulation learning program was developed, including three clinical situation scenarios involving patients with respiratory, simulation flow sheets and checklists. The hypothesis 1 stating that "The experimental group who received the team based simulation learning program will show higher interpersonal understanding scores than the control group receiving a case study" was supported(t=3.99, p<.001). The hypothesis 2 stating that "The experimental group who received the team based simulation learning program will show higher problem solving ability scores than the control group receiving a case study" was supported(t=10.89, p<.001). The hypothesis 3 stating that "The experimental group who received the team based simulation learning program will show higher academic achievement scores than the control group receiving a case study" was supported(knowledge: t=2.48, p=.016)(clinic performance: t=10.21, p<.001).
conclusion: This study demonstrates that a team based simulation learning program for undergraduate nursing students is very effective in promoting interpersonal understanding, problem solving ability and academic achievement. This study is worthwhile in that it was attempt to study a simulation education based on a team. Further research is needed to perform a longitudinal study across the intervention effect, and to apply the nursing curriculum.
