- Abstract
- The purpose of this study was to identify the frequency and related factors of advanced airway management for patients with cardiac arrest by the level-1 emergency medical technicians (EMT) in the 119 Emergency Medical Service.
For the purpose, 95 level-1 EMTs belonging to Gwangju Fire Service Headquarter were surveyed with structured questionnaire composed of general and job-related characteristics, self-efficacy, barrier factors to performing the advanced airway for patients with cardiac arrest and etc. Data for the frequency of advanced airway management by study subjects from January 1, 2010 to June 30, 2011 were obtained from the statistics of Gwangju Fire Service Headquarter. The used statistical methods were t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis.
As a result of this study, there were no significant differences of the frequency of advanced airway management according to general and job-related characteristics. The frequency they felt it was needed and scores of self-efficacy were significant positively correlated with, and domains of self-confidence and experience of the barrier factors were significant negatively correlated with the frequency of advanced airway management. As a result of multiple regression analysis, the related factors with the frequency at advanced airway management were the frequency they felt it was needed and self-efficacy.
In conclusion, it is suggested that the field-based practice education programs and human resource management, which will be enable to judge properly the emergency situation and to improve the self-efficacy, should be developed.
